The origin of the current market

The normal food needs of the local population of Tenerife were always joined by another demand, that of the European expeditions, large and small, that ventured out to other parts of the planet. Magellan and Elcano are among the most illustrious people who made watering and provisioned themselves on the island. Also James Cook, on his way to Polynesia, got hold of fresh fruit in Santa Cruz. Even Nelson, in his retreat after being defeated, loaded his ships with local foodstuffs. It is curious to think how over the centuries hundreds of sailors have stopped in the city to prepare for a great voyage. Tenerife’s food has been and continues to be necessary, demanded and valued.

Those historical navigators did not visit the market to which we dedicate this chapter, because it is much later… Santa Cruz de Tenerife had several markets, which were moved and adapted over time, the current Nuestra Señora de África was built in 1947 and replaced the old Recova, located on the other side of the ravine, which had become too small.

The market or ‘la recova’, as it is popularly known, is today an essential stop on any visit to the city. Following the trend that has changed so many markets around the world, this one has also been able to adapt to the competition of supermarkets and shopping malls, providing an offer that goes beyond purely food.

Because the market also organizes several events. It opens a number of nights a year, some of which are themed, and it also participates in festivals organized by the city. Many of these activities are aimed at children, making a visit to the market even more attractive for the little ones, which is always recommended for them as well, since it is a place where there is an infinity of shapes, colors, smells and flavors that attract their attention. The flowers, the animals, the birds, the swings… and as a reward for those giblets, you can have one of the best ice creams in Santa Cruz.

There is so much to see and do, and we haven’t talked about the most important things, but we will do so in the next chapter dedicated to the market…
