Un paseo urbano con gastronomía “a la carta”

An urban walk with gastronomy “a la carte”.

True, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is far from being a flat city, so the following proposal is downhill, why suffer? This tour will be urban and is little – or not at all – publicized among tourists, but it will allow us to cross the city through some of the neighborhoods that are rarely visited and try some of the fast food eaten daily by its inhabitants, because there is not always time to eat with table and tablecloth.

We start at the top, in the Red Cave, next to the Anaga Mountains, where the city gives way to nature. To get here you can take bus lines 228 or 902(https://movil.titsa.com/verlineas.php). Once in the place, the color that gives its name to the cave and the views of the city from here are striking… and two curiosities: from La Laguna, from above, this place is reached by following the ‘way of the milkmaids’, when they came from that city with their precious cargo. Now it is our turn to follow his path to the center of the coastal city, which we see below. And the other curiosity is that… here was Rambo(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDQMo32Uomw). But let’s go back to the peaceful milkmaids, we have to follow their path and go down the popular streets of Barrio Nuevo and the Salamanca neighborhood. In that place, you will find some of the cafeterias that best serve a Canarian specialty, the bocadillo de pata. Ideal snack to get strength in the middle of the walk, if possible with the ‘barraquito’, one of the most requested coffees on the island.

Not far from the Salamanca neighborhood is the Plaza de la Paz, in its surroundings we can also find establishments with a lot of tradition, specialized in that daily food, the one that you have to eat sometimes in a hurry, and that does not have worse quality.

We are already in the center of the city and we will continue down the tracks parallel to the Santos ravine which, like the milkmaids, also comes from La Laguna. In this great ravine, today almost hidden by the city, water was almost always flowing in the past, and even eagles were fished, which is why the ravine was inhabited. In it, Guanche mummies have been found (which we can visit in the MUNA https://www.museosdetenerife.org/muna-museo-de-naturaleza-y-arqueologia/, where we can also find, by the way, the aforementioned eels); and today we can still see the remains of caves, old dams or banana farms, which also existed here.

A few minutes walk away, we arrive at the mouth, on one side, the MUNA, in the building of the old Civil Hospital, next to the TEA(https://teatenerife.es/), forming the humble ‘island of museums’ chicharrera. On the other side is one of the most carnival and gastronomic streets of the city, the so-called La Noria street, where the offer to eat at any time of the day is wide and modern at the same time. All around the Church of the Conception, the only church on the islands with five naves, which was erected, according to tradition, next to the place where the first Castilians who arrived on the island officiated a mass and nailed a cross in the sand. Cross that ended up giving its name to the city.
