From the hook to the table

In front of the beach of Las Teresitas and several tens of meters deep, lies on the seabed a ship, an old coal ship that sank there in a very curious story: the Westburn. Today only expert divers can see it, but we can all see its bells, still in use in the church of the small village of San Andrés, the closest to the beach. San Andrés is one of the most charismatic nuclei of the island of Tenerife, occupies a wide valley where water flows most of the year and overlooks the Atlantic in its small fishing refuge. It is precisely fishing that has turned San Andrés into a place of pilgrimage if you want to eat fresh fish.

The village has a small pedestrian center, with coquettish earthen houses that are placed around the church, consecrated to St. Andrew of course, and noted for its bells of German origin and its red stone. Around this place, there are many restaurants where fish is the main protagonist: scallops, sama, grouper, tuna… but also limpets, squid, squid or octopus. All basic products in the Canarian gastronomy and fresh as can be. Not in vain, only a few meters separate these restaurants from the shelter that shelters the inshore boats that bring these and other specialties every day.

San Andrés has another charm to add to the pleasure of eating well: it is a town that remains faithful to its traditions, true to its origins, and this is evident in the treatment of the staff and the decoration of the premises. If someone from abroad wants to eat in a ‘Canarian’ atmosphere, this town is undoubtedly a good destination, which has also diversified its offer. The two main avenues of the town, the maritime and Pedro Schwartz, are full of other types of more varied establishments: pizzerias, ice cream parlors, hamburger joints… Altogether, they make San Andrés the perfect place to stop for lunch, as the offer could not be wider, all in the shadow of the bells of the Westburn and next to the iconic castle of the town, of which we only have to investigate who threw one of its walls, there are three options: a flood, a raging sea or a fierce enemy… another curious story of a town that tastes like the sea.
