Anaga on foot, with or without haste

Walking is the king sport in Anaga. Every day, and especially on weekends, hundreds of people take to the trails of the Massif in search of some time in contact with nature.

It should be clear that there are hardly any flat trails in Anaga. Some of these roads start at Cruz del Carmen, which can be reached by public transportation. public transportationIf the objective is also to get as far away as possible from vehicles. This point is a kind of Km-0 of several routes and where the Visitor Center is located. In the Cruz del Carmen, you will find the Sendero de los Sentidos (Path of the Senses). A somewhat easier route, partly adapted to people with reduced mobility. There is another adapted one, on the Las Hiedras track, in the municipality of La Laguna. Both are recommended for children of different ages and it is common to see families touring them.

In general, in Anaga we are facing technically easy but hard trails, as there are large slopes that require a good physical shape and good equipment. The stretches on the summit covered by laurel forest and very often by fog or low clouds are more pleasant. The heat and sunshine become more pronounced as we get closer to the coast.

The network of trails in the Biosphere Reserve is extensive and well marked(https://reservabiosfera.tenerife.es/descubre-anaga/senderos/), and many consider these trails to be the most pleasant on the island. Eight of these routes are even equipped with audio guides. Another 12 trails, with their variations, are free to circulate without any type of permit and then we have the jewel in the crown, the exclusion zones of El Pijaral (also called ‘The Enchanted Forest’) and Monte de Aguirre, where access is not possible without prior permission (see the following table).https://centralreservas.tenerife.es/) and where we will find some of the best examples of laurel forest on the island.

The other option for those trails is to… run them! It is rare that we go walking through them and we do not meet brave people at a much lighter pace. The fondness for mountain running is widespread in Tenerife and Anaga is something of a paradise for these athletes.

So much so, that these routes in Anaga are the scene of several appointments of the annual calendar of mountain races. If you are a runner and prefer to visit new places with the motivation of a competition, here are two options:

– In November, Santa Cruz Extreme. https://www.santacruzextreme.com/

– In December, the K42. https://www.k42canarias.com/nueva/

In both cases, the names are scary, but it is no less true that these races offer different distances, although in the case of Anaga always with many kilometers of elevation gain. Running or walking is definitely the best way to visit Anaga as it will give us the opportunity to see the contrasts between the northern and southern slopes, and between the different altitudes of this privileged area of Tenerife.
