All in green
Walking through the neighborhood of El Toscal, a few meters after the beginning of Santiago street, just at the corner with the small street Santa Clara, we find La Verdulería, a highly recommended vegetarian restaurant with vegan options on its menu. To be completely precise, La Verdulería defines itself as ovo-lacto-vegetarian and, in the preparation of its dishes, it is strongly committed to local production, kilometer 0 raw materials and seasonal fruits and vegetables. Imagine the flavors! In addition to their menu, from Monday to Thursday they prepare different lunch menus that can be enjoyed in the restaurant or to take away.
Finding a free table at La Verdulería is easy if we have some foresight. It is best to call at least one day in advance and make a reservation. But thanks to the interruption of traffic on Santa Clara street, we can now also find a pleasant terrace, which increases the restaurant’s capacity and the possibilities of not being left with the desire to enjoy their proposals. The restaurant also offers a characteristic, neat and picturesque decoration, in a friendly and very quiet atmosphere.
But let’s get to the food: what is the best thing to recommend at La Verdulería?
We start with a classic, the lentils dish, which usually appear as the first dish in the menus and are especially good.
Another of the specialties are the canarian tacos. Another guaranteed success, one of the most requested dishes by customers, and they are also suitable for vegans. It is striking how a dish traditionally related to meat, such as tacos, can be so delicious without meat ingredients.
And from Mexico to Venezuela, from its own version of tacos to the no less personal reversion of the queen of arepas, the well-known Reina Pepiada. In this case, it is served in the form of original miniarepas, with the flavor of zero kilometer avocado, a touch of mojo palmero and goat cheese to put on the table one of the most demanded ovo-vegetarian dishes in the regular menu of La Verdulería.
A menu that, by the way, also offers varied options for coeliacs and people with lactose intolerance.
And be aware that we left out many more delicious dishes -you must go and try them-, but we end this range of recommendations with two more notes: on one side of the table, the mushroom ceviche; and on the other side, the gnocchi, made with pistachio pesto and tomato confit.
In short, the restaurant La Verdulería and its daily menus, in the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, are a safe bet to go green.
