The charm of the hamlets
Chamorga is a population center that belongs to the District of Anaga, within the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is a charming village because it preserves houses that are examples of rural Canarian architecture and is very well connected by the network of trails that cross it.
Its name is due to the ravine and valley in which it is located. In addition to the urban core, it also includes an extensive rural and natural area. It was a valley inhabited by the Guanches, as shown by archaeological finds in the area, belonging to the Menceyato de Anaga.
The village has a small hermitage, belonging to the parish of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves de Taganana. It was built in the 1930s and reserves the cult to the Immaculate Conception with a carving of this virgin of the seventeenth century.
The inhabitants of Chamorga moved by road until 1970, when the highway reached the town. The area has vestiges of the numerous public fountains that once served to supply water to the population. The altitude, orientation and slopes of the Anaga ridge, together with the erosion and vegetation of the area, mean that water has always abounded in this area. The village is naturally endowed with springs and streams, which survive today and were of great importance in the past. In Chamorga there was a main spring, which was located in Paso de la Yegua, from where the locals obtained the water they needed. Later, in 1950, public jets were installed.
The hamlet of Chinamada is characterized by being an ancient Guanche settlement that currently preserves about thirty cave houses. Dwellings excavated in the rocks that were conditioned inside and had a facade. They are still being used as dwellings. This hamlet of Chinamada has been declared a Historic-Cultural Heritage Site. Currently, it is in the process of abandonment and some of these cave houses have been transformed into rural houses for tourists, for their tourist exploitation, so you can take advantage to spend the night in these curious dwellings.
