Curiosities of La Recova, Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s food market

Today we have compiled some curiosities so that you can get to know it even better and understand why La Recova de Santa Cruz is a special place for the city and its inhabitants:

  • The Nuestra Señora de África Market, the Candelaria Basilica and the Cabildo are the work of the same architect:

o The Abasto Market. It has two floors with 228 stalls offering all kinds of products: butcher’s shops, fishmongers, etc.

o A shopping center consisting of 60 stores and services, such as parking, to serve the entire complex.


  • In 1995 a Cooperative Society was created, formed by all its merchants, who work every day to maintain quality and promote this space as one of the main attractions of the city,

  • In 2018, the 75th Anniversary was celebrated, reinforcing its prominence as a symbol of the city.


  • Also in 2018, the Nuestra Señora de África Market received the Gold Medal of the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Gold Medal of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.


  • On Sunday mornings, around La Recova de Santa Cruz, the Rastro is held, with a multitude of stalls and a bustling atmosphere, from the Market of Our Lady of Africa, extending to Bravo Murillo Street.



What makes La Recova de Santa Cruz a point of reference and a place worth visiting is, without a doubt, the stories that take place there every day and of which all those who work to make it a different space, with a lot of flavor, are the protagonists.
