It is curious but what we know today as the Massif is the southern part of an island whose northern part has been eroded to the point of disappearing. In Anaga there have been no volcanic eruptions for millions of years, so its geology is full of traces left by erosive processes. There are numerous ravines, the remains of old landslides are visible and there are also many observable dykes. The observation of the geological traces is one of the motivations that we must have when we stop at one of the many viewpoints that abound in the mountains.

Anaga has a main road that crosses it through the heights, cresting at the top of its mountains, the TF-12, which goes from La Canteras, in La Laguna, to San Andrés, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. During Throughout its route there are several points where it is easy to enjoy the views of the two slopes. Two viewpoints stand out, the Cruz del Carmen, not only because several trails start there and the visitor center is located, but also because it is the only one that faces west, already in the foothills of the massif, so it offers great views of the rest of the island. The lagoon plain in the foreground and the mountain of La Esperanza as the beginning of the great ridge that ends in the Teide, which can be seen perfectly from this place. Along this road, there is another well-known viewpoint, the Pico del Inglés. Facing south, it is located at the top of the hillside, with steep slopes on all sides. At an altitude of almost 1,000 meters, it is not uncommon for them to be covered by fog. When the day is clear, you can see the ravines and trails leading to Santa Cruz de Tenerife through the neighborhoods of Valleseco and La Alegria, with the Tahodio dam halfway.

When the TF-12 reaches El Bailadero, there is a junction with the TF-123, which leads to Chamorga. A few meters from the beginning of this new road, next to some houses located there, is the viewpoint of El Bailadero, perhaps one of the most dizzying of the massif, as its views to the north are produced from the top and overlooking the cliff. From this point, the tone of the vegetation of the Taganana valley is striking compared to the more arid San Andrés.

If we continue on this road we find the viewpoint of La Chamuscada, this section and this stop have the particularity of being in El Pijaral, a special reserve where you cannot walk without permission. In this viewpoint, facing the southern slope, we can enjoy the sensation of being in the middle of the great laurel forest, capable of lowering the temperature and increasing humidity. Visiting these viewpoints we would have seen those that are located at the top, but Anaga still has surprises…

The eastern end of Tenerife, sometimes called the “peninsula” of Anaga, is the oldest area of the island, which began to emerge about 12 million years ago.

[267

post-17918","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog-en
["GET
